The colours of the Iranian flag are traditional, probably dating from at
least the 18th century, and they can be interpreted as representing the Islamic
religion (green), peace (white), and courage (red). They were first designed in
tricolor form in 1907. Iran?s first nuclear power plant at Bushehr was not
online by 2007. Iran defended itself and demanded the withdrawal of Iraqi troops
from Iranian territory and the return to the status quo ante for the Shatt
al-Arab as established under the 1975 Algiers Agreement signed by Iraq and Iran.
Khomeini's government turned down an Iraqi cease-fire proposal in 1982, making a
new demand for Saddam Hussein's removal as well.
In general, Iran has an arid climate in which most of the relatively scant
annual precipitation falls from October through April. In most of the country,
yearly precipitation averages 25 centimeters or less. Known as Persia until
1935, Iran became an Islamic republic in 1979 after the ruling monarchy was
overthrown and the shah was forced into exile. Conservative clerical forces
established a theocratic system of government with ultimate political authority
vested in a learned religious scholar referred to commonly as the Supreme Leader
who, according to the constitution, is accountable only to the Assembly of
Experts. Despite all the work Rice has put into her coalition, diplomatic
efforts are moving too slowly, some believe, to stop the Iranians before they
acquire the makings of a nuclear device. And Iran has played its hand shrewdly
so far.
Of course, Qom isn't the only place in Iran where prostitutes walk the streets.
Back in 2002, the Iranian newspaper Entekhab estimated that there were nearly
85,000 prostitutes in Tehran alone. The question, really, is not whether Iran
would seek to obliterate Israel -- that could never happen -- but whether
America feels comfortable not having the ability to compel Iran to specific
action. The discussion surrounding Iran's future possession of nuclear weapons
should center on the assumption that such weapons are of a defensive nature, not
a tool for conquest or senseless obliteration. Additionally, Iran admitted to
having imported from China 1.8 tons of nuclear material (UF6, UF4 and UO2) used
to manufacture uranium metal, which is essential in weapons production. During
its meetings with IAEA officials in August 2003, Iran for the first time
provided evidence of its technical violations of the NPT by revealing that in
the 1990s, it had carried out 113 uranium conversion experiments involving the
production of uranium metal from imported UF4 and the production of UF4 from
imported UO2, as well as laboratory-scale experiments in the 1980s involving the
production of heavy water.
Iran maintains regular diplomatic and commercial relations with Russia and the
former Soviet republics. Both Iran and Russia believe they have important
national interests at stake in developments in Central Asia and the
Transcaucasus, particularly regarding energy resources from the Caspian Sea.
Instead, America needs a vision of how Iran might be co-opted into a new system
of Middle East security, particularly in light of the instability that will be
created by the eventual reduction of U.S. Iran also abuts the strategic Strait
of Hormuz -- the narrow waterway from the Gulf to the Indian Ocean through which
about one-quarter of the world's oil moves every day. As a result, if Washington
ever lifted its trade embargo on Iran, its territory could be used as the most
obvious transit route for the delivery of oil and natural gas from the Caspian
countries to global markets, especially in Europe and Japan.
Arms had also been supplied years ago by the Iranians to their Shiite allies in
southern Iraq who had been persecuted by the Baath Party. Rather, the particular
contanimation showed that both Iran and Libya had purchased centrifuges and
enrichment equipment from the same source: A.Q. Khan and his black-market
network. In that year a military coup established Reza Khan, an Iranian officer
of the Persian Cossack Brigade, as dictator and then herediatry Shah of the new
Pahlavi dynasty (1925). Reza Shah Pahlavi, ruling for almost 16 years and
installing the new Pahlavi dynasty, thwarting the British attempt at control,
and pushing to have the country developed.
The motives and goals of Iran's mullah government have been even harder for U.S.
Shiites in Iran maintain close cultural and financial contacts with Iraqi Shiite
communities on the other side of the nearly 1,000-mile border between the
countries. Perhaps the only bad thing you can say about Iranian food is that

called (March) for Iran to suspend its nuclear research program in 30 days, but
the statement left unclear what if any response there would be if Iran refused.
For its part, Iran remained defiant, and its slow response to a European
Union–led negotiating effort and the revelation of an additional, previously
unknown enrichment program caused the nations involved (China, France, Germany,
Russia, the United States, and the EU) to refer the issue back to the Security

The Executive Orders and implementing regulations dealing with Iran contain the
legally binding provisions governing the sanctions. This document does not
supplement or modify those Executive Orders or regulations. Iran's educated
population, economic inefficiency and insufficient investment - both foreign and
domestic - have prompted an increasing number of Iranians to seek employment
overseas, resulting in significant "brain drain.". Several smaller saltwater

few small freshwater lakes exist in high mountain valleys.
Iran's transport infrastructure is expanded and industrial development is
encouraged. The country's legal system is taken out of the hands of the clerics.
When I spoke to Clawson, he emphasized that “this Administration is putting a
lot of effort into diplomacy.” However, he added, Iran had no choice other than
to accede to America’s demands or face a military attack. Clawson said that he
fears that Ahmadinejad “sees the West as wimps and thinks we will eventually
cave in. Iran remains committed to an aggressive missile development effort that
includes developing longer range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and a
space launch capability.
And he will receive the Iranian answer. On July 20, 1988, Khomeini, after a
series of Iranian military reverses, agreed to cease-fire negotiations with
Iraq. A cease-fire went into effect on Aug. Iran's huge oil reserves lie in the
southwest, along the Persian Gulf.
Two of the questions concerned Israel's intentions in Iran, a topic of
escalating debate. But the president did not specifically mention the prospect
of Israeli military attacks in his responses. Historically known as Persia, Iran
was one of the greatest empires of the ancient world, which was frequently
invaded. Iran's hereditary monarch, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, fled the country
in 1979 after decades of corrupt and authoritarian rule, and mounting religious
and political unrest. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei serves as
commander-in-chief of the armed and police forces; the head of Islamic Republic
of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the state ministry in control of television and
radio; and leader of the country’s judiciary. The SNSC is composed mostly of top
officials from the ministries of foreign affairs, intelligence, and interior, as
well as military leaders from the army and the Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s main
security apparatus formed in the wake of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Some countries do not yet sufficiently realize that Iranian claims that its
nuclear programme is only intended for peaceful uses are not credible. Others
feel that the threat of massive retaliation, if Iran makes a nuclear attack, is
sufficiently prohibitive not to press Iran to the wall on this issue. The
Iranian.ws is not affiliated with political, religious or any other
organization. Some elements of the Iranian regime and the population remain
hostile to the United States. As a result, American citizens may be subject to
harassment or arrest while traveling or residing in Iran.
Iran is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NNPT) and as such
has every right to produce their own fissile material. To force them into buying
that material from other countries is to violate the treaty and force them into
a position of dependence on and control by other countries. OR, Iran is not a
threat to the United States at this time.".
